YO

Yo

Kalapana

Yo burst out of the post-punk scene in 1984 with Good Tidings, an album the LA Times dubbed “stunning” and “dark, mysterious and disturbing yet engaging, hopeful and steadfastly rocking.” The ten-song album went on to become a college radio hit and garnered a Bay Area Music Award nomination for Outstanding Independent Label Album.

The Oakland-based three-piece, comprised of singer-songwriter-guitarist Bruce Rayburn, bassist Sally Engelfried, and drummer-percussionist Greg Baker, went on to release Charm World in 1985 and Blue Moon in 1986 on Deadbeat Records, each album receiving more acclaim and college airplay than the last. Their final vinyl release was a four-song EP affectionately dubbed “the Greek EP” because it was distributed in the pages of a Greek print magazine. The foundation of Yo’s sound was catchy melodies, quirky lyrics, and a driving rhythm section. Even as their records got more musically complex with extra guitars and the occasional mandolin, saxophone, or fiddle, the band never lost their raw and unpretentious sound. With wistful fairy tale themes weaving through the lyrics and a pop sensibility laced with a punk rock attitude, Yo is difficult to define but easy to love.
